This letterbox is missing as of July 4, 2006.
Please Note: Specific permission for letterboxing as neither been requested of nor granted by the area administrators, so discretion is appreciated.
This letterbox is located on the backside of the dam at Longview Lake. This area is a favorite of local anglers, so if you like to fish bring your gear.
From 470 and Raytown Rd, go south on Raytown Rd eight tenths of a mile to an entrance road that turns east (left) behind the dam. The road isn't named so watch for a break in the grassy median at the bottom of a hill. There will be yellow gates at the entrance that can be closed and locked at night. If you are coming north on Raytown Rd, the entrance is two tenths of a mile past the stop light at Longview Parkway/109th St (the road that crosses over the dam).
Follow the road to its end and park in the lot. From the parking lot follow the concrete and rock water channel that leads up the west end of the dam past the spillway. Walk in the channel or on the grass along the left side of the channel. It's a short walk/climb but very steep in parts.
At the top end of the concrete and rock channel there will be a rock cairn on the left. Remove the two flat rocks on the side that abuts the grass to expose the "cubby hole" where the letterbox is hidden.
Be sure to enjoy the view before you leave. And at the right time of day you might see deer in the woods and clearing to the right.
Be careful on the way down!
