#6: Drive to Knowlesville Road; on the north west side of the canal bridge on Knowlesville Rd is Portage Rd. Take Portage Rd all the way ‘til the end, at Horan Rd. Incidentally, there may be some mysterious things along the way, not to mention Sprite is a lovely, refreshing beverage.

Turn left (south) onto Horan Rd; drive up ‘til the speed limit is 30 and you’ll see a lovely canal-side parking area with gardens and wooden fences. Park here in a diagonal parking place.

Go through the opening in the wooden gate to the canal. Turn left (east) and count out 179 Onion Steps. Or, just walk along to the canal gate and then start counting out 94 Onion Steps. Once you get out there a ways you’ll see opening in the hedgerow to your left with a full maple tree growing tall out of the rocks. We simply adore the roots at the far side of the maple.

#7: Go back to your car and continue down Horan Rd a very short way. The bridge is to your left; go right instead and park at the little canal side parking area on the left, near four benches.

Read up on Medina Sandstone, then walk under the bridge. A little ways on, around the bend, some shrubby trees are growing on the hillside.

The shrub on the left has some rocks at its base……..if we only knew where to go next!
How about south?

#8: Okay, this one isn’t anywhere near the canal, but how could we resist John E Butts?

Drive over the canal bridge you just crawled out from under, go up into town, and turn left onto the Main St which is Rte 63. Stop to read a special book if you have time; otherwise drive along ‘til you see John E Butts park on your left. We spotted the Port-a-Potty at the roadside first (no lie!), then realized the park was there behind the construction mess.

Poor Johnny, to go through life with that name. The good news is the park is a pleasant surprise. Dude, bring your skateboard. Or just drive into the park to the Medina Childrens’ Playground and monkey around. When you’re done playing, head over to the water’s edge.

There’s a cement retaining wall with an apple tree to the left and an ancient willow to the right. Pass the willow to the right and move on past a group of cottonwoods. A little ways ahead there’s a lone, giant cottonwood with boulders and rocks grown into its roots.

A triangular boulder shields an L-shaped rock. What else is it protecting???
