The series NY- a Winter Wonderland celebrates the weather that Upstate New York is famous for ... snow, snow, and more snow!

Box #2 in this series, Snow Showers is located in Arnold Park, in the Town of Vestal. The location of the box is moderate to difficult, due to the steep climb on the trail. The trail is not stroller friendly, as there are lots of exposed tree roots and rocks. A jogging stroller would probably handle them, though. Anything significantly sticking out of the ground is painted bright orange and is highly visible. There are also no dogs allowed in Town of Vestal Parks. Part of the trail passes near a transmission tower, and according to the brochures printed by the Town of Vestal, hiking in this area is not recommended for people with pacemakers.

To reach Arnold Park

From Rt. 434, turn onto African Road. You'll want to head up the hill, away from the plaza and Walmart. At the end of African Road, take a right turn onto Pierce Hill Road. Continue driving until you see the signs for Arnold Park.

Directions to Snow Showers
1. Pull into Arnold Park. Drive past the first parking area, the playground area, and the picnic pavillions. Continue a short distance until you see the brown wood signs for "Vita Trail" and "Nature Trail". Take a left at these signs, and park in the small circular area at the foot of the two trails.

2. Start out by following the "Nature Trail", which is the trail on the right (and not the one behind the gate). Continue on this trail up two steep inclines and until the ground levels off at the top of the hill.

3. At the top of the hill you will see a path to the left, leading to the transmission tower and maintenence building. Leave the Nature Trail and follow this path. Depending on the time of year you visit the box, there may also be directional signs for the local school's X-country team. To make sure you've made the correct turn, look for a VERY obvious triple-trunked tree reaching it's fingers towards the sky.

4. After a very short distance, you will come to a fork in the trail. Bear left, AWAY from the transmission tower. Continue walking until you see a large tree on the right-hand side with orange paint on it. Walk 30 paces PAST this tree.

5. Stop and face directly into the woods to your right. 50 paces into the woods is a large dead tree whose trunk is split into three sections, and the rest of the tree is lying on the ground, spreading out in different directions. Walk to this tree.

6. When you get to the tree, sit on the largest fallen part, with your back to the trunk. On the ground to your left is a hollow log whose end is suspiciously covered with large peices of bark. Could this be where Snow Showers is waiting to catch the unwary letterboxer? Only if you dare to peek in the log will you find the answer!!!

Please hide the box carefully after stamping in, and don't forget to read the waiver of responsibility before heading out.
