The Canyon Treasures letterboxes are hidden at Crooked River Ranch. The hike is about three miles roundtrip and can be very hot and dry in the summer months. Part of the trail entails rock hopping and makes this quest unsuitable for small children and most dogs.

To the trailhead: Just north of Terrebonne on Hwy 97, turn west on Lower Bridge Rd. There is a highway sign for Crooked River Ranch at this intersection. Follow the signs on to the Ranch. Once you have made a 90 degree left turn you will be on Chinook Ave. Take the second left on Badger Rd. which will turn into Blacktail Dr. When you reach Quail Rd. turn right. Take the second left on River Rd. Take the second left at the large fire conditions sign on Folley Waters Road. Go about a mile to the trailhead and parking area on the right. A large tree in the road and a BLM sign marks the spot.

To the letterboxes: Walk past the boulders down the main trail, keeping the rim on your left until you come to a four way intersection. If you go straight here, the trail leads to Steelhead Falls but you want to take the old jeep trail at 250 degrees down to the river. Head upstream until you meet a juniper bonded to basalt. Seven steps at 35 degrees to a stump and seven more at 335 will bring you to the Desert Dubloons letterbox.

Having found hidden gold, it’s on to silver! Continue upstream over boulders, past a standing snag. When you meet up with a burnt out fellow about seven feet tall with hollow eyes, take a heading of 80 degrees. Make your way up to the rimrock sporting a patch of orange lichen. This outcropping has two fingers, one orange and one black that point down to the Dee-Dee-Dee letterbox.

To return to your car, you can continue up the draw from the second letterbox out of the canyon. Up on the flat, continue straight ahead until you meet up with the main trail, a low rock wall just beyond. Take the trail to the right and back to the parking area.
