The hike to this letterbox is abouyt 3-4 of miles each way, over gentle terrain, sometimes flooded in spots by beavers. It is a spectacular opportunity to spot wildlife of all sorts; on past trips along this trail I've seen deer, beavers, foxes, bears, pileated woodpeckers, great blue herons, and almost never other people. It is an island of wilderness surrounded by roads (so if you happened to get lost you could just walk in a straight line and reach a road shortly).
Find the Jackrabbit Trail (in a southerly direction) as accessed from Route 86, between Gabriels and Paul Smiths. Walk along the Jackrabbit Trail until you reach the power pole marked #98. With your back to the pole, take a compass bearing along 98 degrees, and walk 98 feet to the big white pine. Look for the Letterbox at the base of the far side of the tree.
