Length: About 1 1/4 miles total
Terrain: Moderate, but there are many narrow patches of trail with steep drop-offs down to the river. Be extra careful with children or on wet or muddy days.

Directions:
Coming from the south take Route 9 north. After passing the Hyde Park Nursing Home on your left, you will see signs for Staatsburg and the Mills Mansion. Take the next left turn, Old Post Road, as it Y's off to your left. Make next left turn into the Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park. FYI-Further north along Old Post Road is the entrance to the Mills Mansion portion of the park.
Coming from the north take Route 9 south through Rhinebeck heading towards Hyde Park. Drive pass the Dinsmore Golf Club. After passing North Cross Road, County Route 37, on your left make the next right turn which will put right across from the entrance to the park.
Drive into Norrie Point. (If you take the second left turn and follow the signs to the marina and the DCC Environmental Site, there is a small aquarium and museum with information on species specific to this region. No charge for admission.)Afterwards continue driving straight as you were when you first drove in. After crossing over railroad tracks, drive pass where the road loops off to the right and park here. If there isn't enough space you can park anywhere along the road that makes a loop behind you. Notice the metal gate blocking the entrance to the blue trail on your right, this is your return route.

Clues:

Walk along the road and through the wooden gate posts. There is a small parking area at the bottom of this hill and next to the pavillion, but the road is currently being repaved. Continue down the road to the Hudson River. Approximately 30 feet before the bottom of the hill and the edge of the river you will see white trail markers on your right. Take this foot path which begins traveling through picnic areas with wonderful river views. Head north on the white trail following the Hudson River. Be careful of the drop-offs. You will walk past an old wooden pump house, a small peebly beach, and then a large flat rock in the middle of the trail. Take 15 steps forward from the rock and look to your immediate right for a Y-tree and a tree with a hollowed-out base. Walk to it and continue walking straight at 100 degrees for an additional 45 steps towards 2 large boulders with a small birch tree in front and flanked by 2 very large tulip trees. Between the boulders and under smaller rocks hides the Swimming in the Hudson Letterbox.
Retrace your steps and continue along the white trail and over a stone wall. Keep hiking and you will see a small lighthouse in front of you out on the river. The trail curves right as the river indents east. Continue along the waters edge until you can see a red brick building up and to your right through the trees. Look a few feet off the trail on your right to a line of low moss-covered quartz rocks. (Just up the path is a Y tree right at trail edge that sits atop another moss-covered quartz rock.) Step over the quartz and continue at 130 degrees to a flat-sided rock wall about 12 steps away. Turn around and face a 3-trunked tree. To it's right(north side) is a downed woodpeckered tree and a flat topped rock. Under this rock is the Sailing on the Hudson Letterbox. If you pass a Y-trunked large pine tree with numerous snaky roots barely hanging on to land you've gone a little bit too far.
Heading north again will bring you to a rocky carriage trail. Left along this road will take you to the Mills Mansion which sits atop a hill with beautiful lawns and river views. Perfect for a picnic or just to rest. Taking a right here will return you to your starting point. Follow the blue trail markers this time along the carriage trail and walk pass a few old boarded up but interesting buildings. We nearly always see deer in the woods along this road. You wll come to 2 forks in the road, at each intersection keep to the right and soon you will come out to the metal gate along the main road where you parked.
