The first legal claimant of what is now downtown Parkersburg was a Pennsylvanian named Captain Alexander Parker. In 1792, a blockhouse was built at the confluence of the Little Kanawha and Ohio Rivers by the State of Virginia for protection against the Indians. By the early 1800s the village had grown to a dozen log cabins, a store and a tavern and was called Newport. In 1811, the town was incorporated under the name of Parkersburg to honor the man who originally owned the site. Parkersburg could be called "The Savings Bond Capital of America. " Since August 1957, when the U.S. Treasury Department's Bureau of Public Debt was moved here, every United States Savings Bond bought or redeemed has passed through Parkersburg for processing. For more historical and other information on this city go to; http://www.parkersburgcvb.org/.

CLUES:
Difficulty: Very easy
Terrain: Drive up. Wheelchair and Stroller accessible
Time: Less than 30 minutes after you park.
Distance: Less than 100 yards from car to quest and back again.
Please bring your stamp, a stamp pad, an old rag to wipe off the box/your hands and a pen.

To find your quest in Parkersburg first get on 7th street. If you are on the WEST SIDE ( Ohio river side) of town head east on 7th st. to Quincy St. From Market street, it is about 2 blocks to Green street. After crossing Green Street get in the left turn lane and turn left a SHORT distance later onto Quincy Street. If you are on the EAST SIDE of town go west on 7th past the Y where H.W. 47 intersects 7th and get into the right lane. Go straight ahead through the lights at East street and Lynn street to the next Y where 7th street splits off into 8th street (a Pontiac/Kia dealer lot is on the left). Get ready quick and turn right at the next street, which is Quincy .

Once you are on Quincy, proceed up the hill 2-3 blocks to the park with the playground on the right and the protector of freedom, with a long barrel, on the left. Park on the street and go take a look at the Protector Of Freedom. Continue on to where you say the Pledge of Allegiance and then on to the concrete area and wall. Here you will find a map of the view ahead. Look around at the sites below and then look to your left past the tree to the guard rail along the end of a parking lot. Walk over to the guard railing and walk to the left end by the tall fence. Walk along the fence to the back of the parking lot and look slightly left to the three trees in a group. Amongst the three trees is a rusted electric box on a support tower. Just in back of the two closest trees is a concrete cinder block. Between the block and the closest 2 trees is a flat rock and under it lies your quest. When the coast is clear Discretely move the debris off of the flat rock and raise the rock revealing what you came for. Take the box to the shelter close by and leisurely look over the box and its contents. Do your stamping and then discretely return the box to its concealed location, replacing the flat rock and cover it with any leaves or sticks available.
I would appreciate an e mail on the condition of the box and any comments you could provide.
I hope you enjoyed the hunt, even tho it was pretty easy, and enjoy your visit to Parkersburg. And if you need some exercise while at the site go back to the map and look out ahead. Look 90 degrees right to a set of stairs going down the hill. Go walk down the stairs to the street below and then jog back up the stairs to the top. Then go back to a bench and catch your breath. Also, try taking the sternwheeler over to Blennerhasset Island while your here and walk around the island. Its a fun ride and interesting historical site. You can view the flood wall and catch the sternwheeler where the two rivers meet.
