"Amanda's Gold" is in honor of the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged. This year (2004) marks the 18th anniversary of the games being held at SUNY Brockport.

These games give children ages 5-21 the opportunity to compete in Track and Field events, Swimming, Bowling, and various activities and are scored according to their abilities. These kids are the stars and champions of these games, and all deserve gold.

Amanda is an Elba Onion (scallion) who was honored to be asked to carry the banner, with 4 other kids, to lead the Parade of Athletes this year.

Clues:

The Athletes Banquet was held at the Brockport Country Club this year; a wonderful time was had by all.

Without care; free and easy. (fr.)

The Erie Canal, completed in 1824, was built to establish a trade route by boat from the East Coast to the Central U.S. Primarily dug by Irish workers, this 250 mile long canal connects Buffalo, NY to the Hudson River at Albany.

Pine Trees are identified by their needles, which remain during winter.

Sugar Maples are prized for their hard wood and sap. They are identified by their 5 pointed leaves and spinners.

Birch Trees are recognized by their white bark. Native Americans used them to make canoes.

Face the birds. With the birds at 12:00, turn to 7:00 and go to "T".

Stop at "T". Look straight ahead; slightly to the left.
Fallen tree. Attached roots point to the sky.
Go up and over tree, in roots toward road, protected by bark.
