Ironton Rail Trail Series – 2 Boxes planted by Cichlid Guy and Lightnin' Bug

From Allentown, PA proceed north on PA Route 145, aka MacArthur Road. Once you leave the Mall Mutant Zone behind, the environs will actually become more scenic and bucolic.

Turn Left onto Chestnut St (there is a Sheetz Gas station at the corner) and proceed about 0.2 miles until you get to a Red Barn. There is parking there for the Whitehall Parkway.

From the parking lot, head toward the Rules and Regulations sign at the east end of the lot. From the sign, follow the trail at 140° and then go left at the Charles Nehf’s Trail (100°). Follow the trail along the creek and cross the wooden bridge. Continue along to a turnaround area and locate a trail at 180° heading up a small rise. You are now on the rail trail itself. Follow this cinder trail at 290°, passing an abandoned railcar and two old train stations on your right. At the second station, from the center of the arches continue 30 paces (for a 5’10” dude) further on the trail. At this point, find the large maple tree with many roots up the rise at 200°. 9 paces should take you up there to find the Caboose amongst the roots.

Return to the rail trail, heading 115°. You will end up going on a 1.5 mile walk now. You will pass familiar structures on your left, and then you will pass over a familiar creek and under a highway bridge. The rail trail will curve right them left twice. Come to a sign post and from there go North following the rail trail up the hill. You’ll curve right and then pass behind houses. Stop! And Cross Ruch St. Take some time to pay homage to Mr. Shafinsky and the Trolley Line that used to run here. Continue on the trail, heading 60-65°. A more modern cement factory is on the left and some newer steel structures appear on the right. Cross 2nd St to Saylor Park. Do you feel like Dr. Seuss had a hand in designing these structures? How many have roofs and how many do not? Continue down the rail trail. Soon you will see the mighty (?) Lehigh River on your left. Find the 6th electrical pole (looking NW first), the one with “GSC/M-F/SPP8/2-25” stamped into the downstream side. Go at a bearing of 205° some twenty paces to a tree growing out of some rocks. Find it under some rocks in the roots. You will have to bushwhack the last 5 or so paces. Stamp in and enjoy your Seussian stamp!
