Directions to Pine Trails Nature Preserve:
Long Island Expressway(495)to William Floyd Parkway Exit 68. Travel north to Rte. 25. Take Rt.25 east approximately .7 mile to the parking area on the right side of the road.
Please note: bring your own stamp pad, pen and compass.

Fairly level terrain. To the Pine Trail Letterbox and back to the parking lot, a little less than 2 miles. To the Pine Trail Letterbox, then on to the Brookhaven Trail Letterbox, looping back along Rte.25 to your car, approximately 3½ miles.

After parking your car, consult the trail map posted on the information board. The white trail is fairly easy to follow. It crosses over many woods roads that have been cut through.

Begin walking on the trail . Cross the first woods road. At the fork, go left, follow the Parkland sign.
Cross the next road cut. Ignore the path to the left, continue on white.
Cross two more woods road cuts. You will notice a tree that has fallen between the V of another tree and you will walk between two chunks of the tree’s trunk lying on the ground.
Cross an unmarked trail. Continue on until you see a tall pine tree right next to a small oak with a white blaze, almost in the middle of the trail. Stop, turn around and go back 21 steps. To your left is a tall pine tree. Look behind it for the Pine Trail Letterbox. Up ahead you will soon cross a woods road that was once paved. Look down the road to the left, you may see some horses. Immediately after crossing that road, look to the right for 3 magnificent pines. You will notice a lot of ground disturbance: man made fences that have been erected for paintball games. It appears there is some sporadic activity in this area, so please be discrete when hunting for and rehiding this box. At this point, you can double back the way you came to get to your car.

If you wish to find the Brookhaven Trail Letterbox, return to the path in the direction you were heading. The trail will begin to have a slight downhill grade. You will pass over 11 step logs that have been built into the trail. Cross a wood road cut. You will arrive at high tension wires. Cross to the opposite side of the wires, turn to the left and in about 100 paces you will pick up the white trail again on your right. The path is now narrow, winding and unmistakable. Continue on this trail until you come to a fork with a sign pointing to the Brookhaven Trail on the left. Take it, and follow the yellow blazed trail. It is also narrow, winding and unmistakable. Along the way you will pass a three trunk pine tree in the midddle of the path. Continue on. In time you will come to a sandy road cut. Cross over it and continue on the yellow trail. After a time you will come to a place where there are 2 downed trees, parallel to each other, lining the edges of the trail. Walk to the ends of the tree trunks, stop and turn around. Take 15 paces forward just past the trunks. Look to your right. You will see 2 groups of young trees each group growing in a tight circle around a dead tree in the middle. The Brookhaven Letterbox is buried between the two groups of trees. After stamping in, return to the trail and continue on. Soon you will begin to hear road noise. The trail will lead you to Rte.25, a little more than a mile east of where you parked your car. (If you are in need of refreshment, there is often a hot dog truck parked where the trail comes out on the road. If not, there is a gas station, deli, and pizza place .3 of a mile further east).
