To the trailhead:
Follow Highway 34 to the Mary's Peak turnoff. Once you turn off onto Mary's Peak Road, pull into the first parking lot on your left or the one to your right. Neither one requires a parking permit, but if you plan on going on up the road to get the Mary's Peak letterbox you'll need to pick up a Northwest Forest Pass.

To the letterbox:
This area was a Civilian Conservation Corp campsite in 1933. 37 young men, some of them war protesters, were put to work planting trees and building a fire lookout on Mary's Peak. The men lived in outdoor camps and this site is the remnants of one of them. Some of the logs you will step over on this trail are from their houses.

Head up the trail after reading the rest of the story of the CCC site. At the 4 way intersection continue forward. Soon you'll come to a large log over the trail. There's a bridge directly on the other side of the log, which of course there's a troll under so you wouldn't want to cross it. Instead, take the left up the hill along side the fallen log. Up several small flights of stairs you'll come to a place where numerous logs were chopped up and left. Watch the right side of the trail, pass two larger sections and then look for a third larger section which is tucked behind several smaller sections. The box is tucked into the end of the larger section behind some sticks and debris. Please recover it well, it will be visible from the trail if you don't!

This box is not very far up the trail but it's a beautiful hike and I would highly recommend continuing on and hiking for a ways more!

Happy Hunting
