Kennedy Creek is a small low-land stream that flows into the head of Totten Inlet in Southern Puget Sound. It is one of the most productive chum salmon production streams in Washington State. Kennedy Creek chum are a fall-run stock, generally returning to the stream between mid-October and mid-December. The best viewing opportunities are during the month of November. The Trail offers salmon viewing and habitat interpretation in a natural setting that educates students, teachers, and the general public about what Washington's at-risk salmon runs need to survive and prosper. The 2-mile interpretive trail is a low-impact trail system with interpretive signs and viewing platforms for watching wild chum salmon. The trail traverses riparian areas and pleasant second growth lowland forest. Most of the trail is ADA accessible

As of the planting, the Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail is a work-in-progress. Most of the trails and viewing platforms are in, most of the interpretive signs are in, but don’t have the interpretive information in them yet, it may have been removed while the salmon are not there to enjoy it. It will be a great place when it is done. Currently, there are no facilities to rest or drink or picnic.

To The Trailhead: From I-5 take Exit 104 to US-101. From Highway 101 in south Mason County, approximately halfway between Olympia and Shelton, turn west at milepost 356 onto Old Olympic Highway. Go ¾ mile to the turn-off to a gravel road signed "Kennedy Creek." Go ½ mile on the gravel road to the Salmon Trail parking area.

WARNING: The road from the Old Olympic Highway to the parking area is a Simpson Timber Company logging road. Be aware that logging trucks have the right-of-way when they are using the road.

To The Letterboxes: . Park in the parking lot. There is one trail into the viewing area. You will come to an unfinished teepee, note the ornate metal salmon. Head thru the teepee and continue on the trail. You will come to a fork in the trail, the starting point for both of your adventures.

Head left over the bridge. At the next fork you will want to turn right. Go up onto the viewing platform and enjoy the view, especially if the salmon are running! Go back to the interpretive sign and read the scintillating information. As you look ahead, you will see the next interpretive sign along the trail. In-between you will see a short stump with a short log. The Naturalist is between the two under the mushroom.

Head to the right. At the next fork, head to the right. At the next fork, head to the left. At the next fork, head to the left. At the next fork, don’t fall off the bank into Kennedy Creek, the salmon wouldn’t like it. Go back to the highly informative interpretive sign, read it to see if there are any clues. To your left you will see a nurse stump. The Outdoorsman hides within the stump.
