Saltwater park is an 88-acre marine camping park with 1,445 feet of saltwater shoreline on the Puget Sound. The park is located halfway between the cities of Tacoma and Seattle. The cities jointly and literally buried a hatchet in the park as a symbol of an end to their mutual competition. This was the inspiration for the stamps I carved. The park offers beautiful views and wildlife-watching opportunities.

These are pretty easy boxes to get. Each one will take about 15 minutes and can be done with small children and yes, dogs! Be sure to go to the sound front and walk the paved trail. There is a small playground and lot's of picnic spots and benches to watch the sun go down. Couldn't hide a letterbox there though because it's too well maintained. So I hid them more on the outer trails. Colored markers would enhance the stamps!

Driving Directions

From the South:
Take exit #147 off I-5. Follow signs west, and turn right on 16th St. past the Safeway store. Then follow signs to park. Turn on Marine View Dr., which runs through the park. Turn left into the park.

From the North:
Take exit #149 off of I-5, go west, then turn south on Hwy 99. Follow the signs into the park. Turn right on 240th at the Midway Drive-In. Turn left on Marine View Dr. and turn right into the park.

Box 1 - ANNIVERSARY BOX - Reported MIA as of 10/01/04
This isn't one of my boxes but I ressurected it from the letterboxing basement. I tried to contact the placer- "Jennie and Steve aka teathyme and thunder" but haven't been able to. Have heard throught the letterboxing grapevine that they have moved on. So I will just re-post these clues and babysit it for them.

"Today, December 16, we celebrated our 7th year of wedded bliss! In commemoration, we placed a letterbox near one of our favorite vistas. We hope you enjoy the spot as much as we do. Jennie and Steve aka:teathyme and thunder"

Park in the 1st parking lot in the park (on your left) before going all the way down the hill. Cross the road on the crosswalk. Take the trail to the restrooms. At the restrooms take the trail at about 130. Continue on the trail until you pass a large stone chimney on your right. Continue on the trail at about 200. Pass under a skinny, twisted Madrone arch. Keep the fencing to your left and pause occasionally to enjoy the views. The beach is beautiful and on a clear day you have majestic views across the water to the Olympics! Find a tall Fir on your right sheltering its young one from the salty wind. Have a seat on the bench next to the firs and enjoy the undulating water, rythmically lapping waves and soft, salty breeze some more! Stand between the trees and bench facing about 50 and take 9 steps to the 3 ft. stump. The box is there, at its roots, snug in a den on the South side, hidden behind some bark and a stone. Stamp in, hide it well-please re-cover, and then please continue along the fence and enjoy the rest of the peaceful scenery. At a hugging fir and Pacific Madrone the trail curves away to your right and will lead you back to your vehicle.

Box 2- "PEACE" - Alive and well 05/25/05
Drive down the hill and straigt ahead but a little to the left is a restroom. Park near here. To the left of the restroom is a brown hiking sign. Take this trail. It will wind to the left. You have a choice; Right is too steep! Take a left. Go approx 100-105 steps and as the trail takes a turn to the right notice the big tree that lost it's top with Ivy crawling on it. At it's base and to the front right is a dead log. This box is under it hidden under leaves and branches. Please re-cover all boxes!

Box 3- "Bury the Hatchet" Alive and well 05/25/05
From the same restrooms in Box 2 clues. Look across the parking lot. Find the first picnic shelter on the North side. There is a big Kiosk sign there with park information on it. Look to the left of this. There is a little bridge going over the little creek. After crossing it take a right. People across the creek may be playing horshoes or volleyball.Watch for about 13 brick stones to the right of your feet on the creek side. At the 1st brick, look to your left. There is a holly tree in the middle of two other bigger trees. At the base of the tree on the right is this box, under leaves and sticks. Please recover.
