Mesa Trail is up by the NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) center. A federally funded research and development center, they study our atmosphere and how it affects us. Their building, which sits on a hill overlooking Boulder, was designed by I.M. Pei and is quite impressive in itself.
Behind the NCAR building is a trail that leads to a series of trails, some of which end up at the famous flatirons. Head out on the trail, go down the hill, keeping to the right towards the ridge that overlooks Boulder. The trail then goes up through a grove of trees onto the adjacent hill. At the top of the hill you will find a green water tower. Go past the water tower. Go to the last Mesa Trail sign in this area. 18 paces past the sign there is a false trail to the right. 26 paces up this trail is a rock pile on your left. The box is hidden in this pile.
This hike is easy, although there are ups and downs. Round trip is about 1.5 miles.
