Southern New Jersey

Quaker Joseph Thorn bought the farm and in 1816 built a fine 11 room federal-style brick home for his family of eight.

In 1826, a different Joseph, a descendant of the founder of Camden, bought the 168-acre farm as a summer retreat.

Eventually Chestnut Grove Farm, as it was then known, was passed along to his great-granddaughter, the modern namesake of the property.

In the 1950's a developer bought the farm, or at least a piece of it, more than 100 acres, resulting in the establishment of a housing development.

The local township bought the farm, what remained of it, in 1974 and it has since been maintained as a museum and park.

Park in the lot. Following the brick pathway, note the restored apple orchard. Admire the facade of the 19th-century farmhouse. Set a course for 300° and gambol across the lawn toward small signposts. At the first of the two signs, the Lowland Trail head can be spied at 280°.

Cross a metal grate bridge. Skirt a marsh dominated by Red Maples. Another bridge. Make your way along the winding forest path always keeping to the small, gentle river. Pause at the archway created by a V-tree supporting a dead tree trunk. From the archway, 35 paces. With the water levels at average depth, to the right, the littlest waterfall, scarcely a disruption in the flow. Just up and downstream, almond shaped, bedrock "islands". At 70° 4 paces, stands a large tree, oak?, its lowest branches high and obscured by surrounding trees.

Continue upstream past the rope swings and the second tiny falls. At the property's edge, the fence, take the path at 20°. Crossing the wooden bridge over the dam will bring you to the end of your journey.
