Difficulty: Moderate to challenging: rock and stair climbing involved.
Time: About 1 hour hike.

One of the best kept secrets of the Cleveland Metroparks is a huge chunk of sandstone known as Squaw Rock. Elaborately carved in 1885 by Henry Church, this treasure rests alongside the Chagrin River in a woodland setting that must be seen to be believed.
Excellent photo opportunity!

Directions:
Take I 271 to Beachwood, exiting at Chagrin Blvd. Turn east and stay on Chagrin until you reach Rte. 91 or S.O.M. Center Rd. Turn right (south) and travel 2.5 miles until you reach the entrance to the South Chagrin Reservation on your left. Turn into the park and follow Hawthorne Parkway until you see the sign for Squaw Rock picnic area (about 1.5 mi.).

CHAGRIN RIVER LETTERBOX

After parking, begin your hike in the northeast corner of the parking lot; walk towards the ridge until you see the stairway. Take this trail down the side of the ridge and alongside the Chagrin River. It gets pretty narrow and precarious in spots, so be careful! In a little while you will see Squaw Rock, with its pictures that were carved there in 1885.
After you have checked it out, walk around the south side of the rock, heading for the river. Walking south along the bank, you will pass through a small grove of trees. Continue upstream among the rocks and boulders until you see a giant boulder before you. Under the roots of the maple tree on the rocky outcropping to your right is the Squaw Rock Letterbox.

To return to your car, take the stairway near Squaw Rock all the way to the top. Then turn right on the main trail, heading north towards the parking lot.

Hike length: 1 mile
