More Letterboxing Hazards

Planted in August, 2004, with the help of Hiker Lou.

This series of five boxes is dedicated to those of us who have experienced these little annoyances on the trails!

The site is Chatfield Hollow State Park in Killingworth, CT. After Labor Day, the gate is up but it is not a long walk to the start of the trail. The series, from its start, should take under an hour for an average hiker.

Start on the trail that begins across the bath house and just before the building with the public phone. This red trail’s start is set back and begins with a large set of stairs. Climb a bit, and just after the tripping root and before the double-red-blazed tree, look behind the large rock on the left for your box. Stamp the hiker four times; one for each hazard!

Stay on red and pass by all sorts of interesting rocks. Between two granite ledges where the wall on the left ends, look behind two rocks by a dead tree on the right for a trapdoor rock with Itch behind it!

Continue down the red for a while, passing all kinds of rock and ledge. Look near a 3-sister tree growing out of rock on the right for Bite!

At the point where you are about to loop down and back, look in a cave on the right for Scratch!

Continue on through some challenging areas. Watch your footing! Look low by two dead trees by a ledge on the right for Ouch!

Go right when you meet the violet trail and you will easily find your way back to your car.
