From the Richmond monument walk along the front edge of the cemetery south down the street to the Tracy monument.
In the 1800s the Tracy family adopted little Philemon from down south. He lived with the Tracys until the Civil War broke out, then went back down south to fight. He was killed in battle, and his new family had his body brought back up north for burial. Philemon is the northern-most buried Confederate soldier.
Once you find his grave site, continue south to the next pair of gateposts. The southern post, or the one closest to Joseph Ellicott's sign, houses a reminder of Philemon's efforts and the depth of a family's love even in conflict.
