Are you feeling a little queasy from swinging on the H. Wallace Caldwell Memorial Bridge? I know just what you need…a nice hot Spinach Latte. (Or is it a cold Spinach Latte? I can’t keep all those coffee drinks straight!) Anyway, there is only one place to get it…at Grumpy’s.

Grumpy’s Coffee and Ice Cream Café (no affiliation…I'm not a coffee drinker, though they do have yummy ice cream!) is located a stone’s throw away from the hiding place of the Swan Pond letterbox. (Do be careful throwing stones. The neighboring buildings probably won’t appreciate broken windows.)

This is another box where you have to request it from an employee by using a secret password. Here you have to request a Spinach Latte. (If for any reason there is confusion over the request, politely ask to speak to Mr. Grumpy, AKA David the proprietor.) The employee will hand it to you. When you are done stamping in (discretely, of course), return it to the employee for hiding behind the counter. That’s it!

I hope you weren’t feeling too Grumpy when you arrived, but do leave happy with your new letterbox find!

==============

Grumpy’s is located at 35 E. Burlington, a short walk from the Riverside stop on the BNSF Metra commuter line (NORTH side of the tracks).

Hours until the warm weather arrives are until 5 pm all week... when school lets out in early June, hours are extended to 10 pm. You may want to avoid the busy after school hours.

Hours subject to seasonal changes; call ahead to confirm:

Introducing Grumpy's LTC Hostel!

What is an LTC?
They are a variant of ATCs or Artist Trading Cards. ATCs are small pieces of artwork (2.5" by 3.5", the size of a baseball card), created for the sole purpose of trading with other artists. So, LTCs are created with the intention of trading with other letterboxers. The difference is that a LTC must include a stamped image. Most do prefer a hand carved stamp just as they do in the hobby of letterboxing and this is the general consensus. They may contain your signature stamp on the front as part of the overall design, or a specially carved stamp on the front with your sig stamp on the back. More information about LTC's may be found at http://www.atlasquest.com/aboutlb/wiki/browse.html?gCatId=39

So what is an LTC Hostel?
Instead of trading in person, I've left eight LTC's inside the "Come Grumpy, Go Happy" letterbox. If you'd care to trade, you can leave one card you've made in the Hostel and take one that's been left there. Eventually there may be none of my cards left, but you can trade for one someone else left. You can notify the other letterboxer you accepted their card from the Hostel on AQ and log your find. If you have two to trade, you can do so, but I ask you not trade more than that. If you don't have any cards to trade, please don't take one (Letterboxer's Honor!) so that future finders aren't disappointed.

While this bears some similarity to the original calling cards which were left in jars in Dartmoor, I believe this is the first of its kind here in the States. Please let me know how things are working out, and if you have any suggestions or ideas to make it work better.
