Anyone who has done much gardening knows that the best garden designs are found in Nature. Jack-in-the-Green, or the Green Man, is the one responsible for these masterpieces. He uses the perfect plants and places them in the perfect spots. A rock here, some shrubs there, blending textures, deciduous and evergreen, different flowers at different seasons. And he does a glorious finale in Autumn before he turns things over to Jack Frost.

No wonder, then, that Jack-in-the-Green has been honored for ages. He appears in the stonework of most cathedrals in Europe and all cultures honor him or the feminine equivalent. He has come to symbolize the irrepressible force of nature, using cycles of death and renewal to create the Eden that we see every day.

To find Jack turn west on 25th street in Durango and go up Junction Creek Road. Bear left just before the road turns to gravel and follow this road as it winds for seven miles up to Animas Overlook. Head down the asphalt trail until you find a sign that talks about "A Dynamic Forest". With your back to the sign see a small stump due north fourteen steps away. Jack lives under a rock by this stump.

Make sure you hide him back real well, and then go hunting for Olga Little, Animas Overlook, Animas Coyote, Lynx, and Fafnir letterboxes on this same trail loop.
