Fairy Waterfall of Locust Grove

The Fairies and Fauna of Locust Grove have noticed a number of new visitors to their home in the Samuel Morse Historic Site woodlands.

Upon investigating the cause, some of the pixies came across a letterbox hidden among their home. Always up for some mischief, they decided to get in on the fun as well. Follow the clues to find their hidden box and you may just hear some fairy laughter when you do!!

Find your way to the Samuel Morse Historic Site, located on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, NY. After stopping in at the Visitors Center for a Trail Guide, weave your way through the uppergrounds and to the right of the house to find the trails at the rear of the estate.

Starting off on the Lane Loop, follow the path through the woods. Pick up a pebble or two for good luck and look out for the Lakeside trail on your left.

Follow the Lakeside Trail the beginning of the Cascade Trail, on your left.

As you wander up the Cascade Trail, you may be adventurous enough to search out another letterbox!

When you come to the Fairy Waterfall, stand on the bridge, toss in your pebble and make a wish to the fairies. Cross over the bridge and turn to your left. Climb up the embankment toward the top of the cascade. It may be a bit tricky, as the forest has put a huge tree to sleep across the top of the cascade. Once you reach the top of the cascade you will notice a very large and old tree fallen across the stream. You can sit on it and soak your feet later, but for now, follow the tree to it's fallen base. On your way you will notice a number of rock formations in the stream: some great rocks to climb across, a 4 foot flat rock and a gathering of smaller rocks that lead to an elbow in the stream, just after the base of the fallen tree. This elbow seems to be a recent turn in the stream, so it may come and go with weather conditions. The 4 ft rock probably won't be going anywhere!

At the base of this fallen tree, turn so that your back is toward the tree base and notice a sapling growing which has a split trunk so two trunks seem to grow up from one spot and then twist to start forming an X. This is only a few steps from where you are standing. Walk up and face the sapling; at "10:00" you will see a large rock protruding from the ground, with a few "helper" rock surrounding it. Behind it will be the fairies hidden box!

(8/3/13 update: Letterboxers have found this box as recently as July "13, however, a lot of the fallen trees and width of the stream has changed because of weather conditions. We were there today and if you stop about 6ft before the base of the decomposing tree, turn so your back is to the stream- about 6 ft to your right and up the bank will be the protruding rocks and some crockery on top. Stamp pad is missing and pad is damp, so we will try to get back soon, but stamp is intact. Please let me know if this helps and if you found it ok!)

These boxes were hidden with children and stroller in tow, so they are "little people" friendly. Please contact us with any questions regarding clues or the condition of the box. Thanks!
