McClellan Park was given to the town of Milbridge in 1925 by George B. McClellan, son of the Civil War general. The younger McClellan was a frequent visitor in the area and may have planned to build a house there. He was a lawyer and educator, an alderman and later Mayor of New York City, and even a Representative to Congress for New York. He had a love for this area, and when he donated it, McClellan stipulated that it be used for a public tenting and picnicking ground.

“The best kept secret in downeast Maine," is the way one resident describes McClellan Park in Milbridge. It features spectacular views of open ocean and the islands. The rocky shoreline provides the perfect place for children to climb or explore the life in a tide pool. It's scenery is as sensational as that of Schoodic Point or Acadia National Park, but there's not traffic and crowds. The park offers picnic areas, camping sites and bathroom facilities. My wife thinks it’s the most beautiful place in New England and a must see on every visit.

Clues to find the Box

Upon entering the Park take your first right to a small parking area near the ocean.

From the small parking area begin walking towards the water. Take the second trail on the right which leads to two picnic tables on the edge of the woods. Stand between the picnic tables and look to the ocean and spot the iron post. Walk 10 steps towards the post and then take the path on your left.

Follow the path to the top of the speckled rock. "X" marks the spot to view the pink granite boulders along the ocean's edge. From the spot turn your back to the ocean. Your treasure is hidden by small rocks under corner of the small speckled rock before you.

Enjoy the rocky coast of Maine while you stamp in.
