Reported missing yet again. If you are in the park to find any of the 30-odd other boxes, please consider looking for this one anyway - the more eyes the better!

Bowdoin Park Letterbox
Re-carved and re-planted by Rabbit’s Friends and Relations
16 June 2006

Easy walk, about a half mile
New stamp, new hiding spot

DIRECTIONS to Bowdoin Park:
From the North – go south on Rt 9 past the city of Poughkeepsie. Look for a Citgo gas station on the left and then a Raia Self-Storage on the right side of the road. Directly after the self-storage place, make a right turn onto Shaefe Road (there is a green directional sign saying “Bowdoin 3 miles”). The park entrance is on the right.
From All other Directions – Take I-84 to NY exit 11 (Route 9D/Wappingers/Beacon). Head north on 9D towards Wappingers Falls (other boxes along this stretch!). Make a left onto SR28 (look for the big Pink and Green Barn on the corner). Take SR28 to the end. Make a right on to Main St/Channingville Road. Past the firehouse and the convenience store make a left on to Sheafe Road. Go approx a 1/2 mile and make a left into the park.

Once in the park, drive straight through the crossroads until you go down the hill (beware of a couple of difficult-to-see stop signs near the playground!). Park near the playground.

CLUES:
Walk across the playground to the trio of turtles. Stand in front of the lead turtle, facing the Hudson River, and step forward until you’re standing on the outermost orange stripe. If you stretch your arms out to the sides, your right hand will be pointing to a trail head across a small meadow. Follow this unmarked trail into the woods and down a little hill. Walk over a culvert, over a long wooden bridge, and bear left at the Y. Follow the mown path up a hill until it veers right back into the woods. Very shortly look for an unmarked narrow trail to cross your path. Take a left onto this trail.

Only a few yards along the trial, watch for a large dead tree lying on your right, still partially attached to its splintered trunk. As you approach, you will see that there are two parallel logs. The second (larger) tree has a stub of a branch supporting the log slightly off the ground. Under this stub, under bark and rocks, and wrapped in a bit of burlap, is the Bowdoin Park box.

We scouted very carefully for poison ivy at this site and found none, but please keep an eye out, as there is some growing nearby. If you have to push through any brush, you’ve gone too far. Please take some time in re-hiding this box. Our first box went missing this winter, so we’ve planted this one just a bit further off the more popular path – but if left uncovered it wouldn’t be hard to spot! To return, come back out to the main path, and turn left. You will shortly come out into the open. You can walk along the road back, or cut across the mown meadow to the playground, which you can see from this spot.

ALSO:
While you are here, bring clues to the Spring is HERE: Nature Loop boxes (8), and Spring is HERE: Pavilion Loop boxes (4). If you are boxing with kids between Memorial and Labor Day, think about bringing a bathing suit as well – the turtles spout water!
Should you wish to look for all the boxes in one day, we recommend the Nature Loop first, this Bowdoin Park box next, and the Pavilion Loop last. Have Fun!
