First in the 'Zoo

Last confirmed: April 17, 2008

Clues
Note: This is yet *another* replacement and relocation
of the
previous two “First in the ‘Zoo” letterboxes.
(And, in fact, this was the first letterbox in Kalamazoo)
Some new clues, new location, new stamp.
If you’ve been here before, it’s open game again.
It was first placed in 2002.

Easy walking

The "First in the `Zoo" letterbox is located in
Kleinstuck Preserve, a 50 acre oasis in the heart of
Kalamazoo, Michigan. Most city maps will show it
although it may not be specifically named.
There are several entrances to the preserve, but to
find the "First in the`Zoo" letterbox use the
following:

Enter behind the YMCA on Stearns & Maple Street off
Oakland Drive or Bronson Blvd.
The south (far) end of the parking lot leads you to
the outdoor tennis courts and the boardwalk. Follow
the boardwalk to the path that leads into Kleinstuck.
Very soon you'll see a manhole cover.
Follow on to the right; you'll see Welcome signs. Note
the rules.
Pass another manhole then you’ll come upon the
master’s stump. You might want to pay attention to
the details.
Go right up the hill.
A lonely, beheaded pine greets you here.
Look to 330 degrees for a trail and follow it. At a
minor Y, bear left.
After perhaps an eighth of a mile, you’ll meet the
school trail.
You’re skipping school today so move accordingly.
A traveled route requires a choice. Go the direction
of the 3rd letter on the manhole sign. Stretch your
legs.
A huge oak has fallen alongside the trail on your
right.
Just a bit further on the trail is a man-made barrier
guarded by rusty red-tops. Note its orientation.
You’ll pass on or near five large metal rounds before
your next marker. (At a small creek, bear left).
At the fifth, a green marked tree is a curiosity.
You’ll come upon the junction of a trail and an
uprooted tree lying in the same orientation as you
noted earlier. You’re at the triangle.
If the invitation was placed in an even number year,
go south.
If in an odd number year, go north.
Walk 40 steps to a giant oak.
Walk 40 steps to a giant oak.
(Sometimes I forget and repeat myself…..I can’t
remember if this is one of those times)
Walk three score to a giant oak.
Just a short stroll to the wall, now sight 30 degrees
and walk to a lonely beheaded pine.
Now go due north 13 steps.
See the path weave through the trees to your right?
Four dozen steps reveal a slight trail on your
left.
Go for 13 steps to a mossy log.
Look under its grounded end, on the west side where it meets the ground.
