Confirmed alive and well on June 16, 2006 - new stamps placed at that time!!

You are about to climb my favorite mountain in the Adirondacks. Although it is one of the shorter mountains, it gives you an amazing view of Heart Lake and the High Peaks. Mount Jo has two routes to get to the summit. You will begin going up the long route and down the short route. There are some very steep sections of the trail, but the view is well worth the hike! Round trip is about 2.5 miles. If you are interested, pick up the interpretive guide (found at the Nature Center) to the short trail, as you will be following this on the way back down the mountain. Please make sure you are prepared and take at least water with you, as it can be a strenuous hike. I hope you enjoy this hike as much as I do!

Directions to Mount Jo

From Lake Placid take route 73 east towards Keene. About 1 mile or so after the Olympic Ski Jumps take a right on Heart Lake Road. Drive to the end to the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK). There is a $9.00 fee for parking at ADK. This is also the trail head for Mount Marcy and the rest of the High Peaks.

Mount Jo Letterbox #1

Follow signs to Mount Jo and make sure to register at the trail register at the beginning of the trail. When the short and long trails split, go to the left and follow the long trail. Hike until you see a High Boulder Wall to your right. Begin steep ascent up trail (what is at times a stream bed) to a second High Boulder Wall. At the top of this ascent the trail takes a hard right. There is a red ADK trail marker on a white background at this turn. From the tree that the trail marker is nailed to, walk 314 degrees to a shedding quadruple tree (there was a recent tree fall here - there is much brush that makes the shedding quadruple tree more difficult to spot). From this tree go almost due north to a tall dead tree. From this tree go 350 degrees to a large rock. From the top of this rock go 50 degrees to a shedding double tree. At the base under some bark and branches is what you seek. Please do not tear bark off of trees to rehide the box!

Mount Jo Letterbox #2

Continue to the top of the mountain and enjoy the view. As you come back off of the summit please follow the signs to the short trail. This is the steeper trail, and has numbered signs for the interpretive guide found at the Nature Center. As you count down, find #6. With your back to the post (and another very large boulder wall) walk about 15 steps to the north across a small gully. You will see large boulders with a shedding double tree. Just to the left at the base of this tree under some rocks is what you seek.
