John Brown was an abolitionist who led a raid on an ammunition store at Harpers Ferry in West Virginia. He was captured and hung for his actions, along with several of his sons. This farm nestled in the hills just outside Lake Placid is his family home. His wife and remaining children struggled to maintain the farm while he was alive and after his death. John Brown's body was returned to the farm and is buried on the site along with his sons and some of the men who died during the raid at Harpers Ferry.

John Brown's farm is located at the end of John Brown Road. This can be accessed from route 73 or from route 35. Follow the road until it dead ends at the farm. Park on the side of the road and head towards the farm.

Take the opportunity to read the historical information at the beginning of the pathway. You can visit the grave site of John Brown and his sons. Take a tour of the farmhouse if you wish. It will be a minimum of $2 for a guided tour.

Continue your stroll down the pathway towards the pond and trail register. If you are going to take the opportunity to do some hiking or cross country skiing, then sign in. There is a choice of trails that you can use.

Head towards the barn, stay to the right of the barn listening for the birds and crickets as you go. Find the rear door of the barn. Take a reading of 230 degrees and head towards the tree. At the tree, take a reading of 310 degrees to the corner of a fence. If you are having trouble finding the fence, look for a stand of giant pines. Your prize awaits. You know you are in the right place if the large ski tower is at a reading of 50 degrees.

Enjoy the farm and its surroundings, take a hike or ski.
