Repaired and replaced 4/22/07

Take Rt. 101 East from Manchester, NH to Exit 1.
Follow the brown sign toward the Audubon Center BUT at the Massabesic traffic circle take Rt. 121 East toward Auburn and Chester instead.

Follow Rt. 121 East--Lake Massabesic will soon be on your right.
The trail head is 1.3 miles east of the traffic circle on the right. There are a few parking spots beside the road.
(hint--there is a yellow right curve sign beside the road at the trail head.)
Take the trail through the metal gate--or the path between the boulders which is closer to the water. Both will take you to the clearing on the right with a large log perfect for lake viewing.
Rest a while.
When you are ready to continue, follow the left trail/fire road. It will curve away from the water, soon you will see a path heading to the right into the woods. Take this path across a wooden bridge.
At the end of the bridge look north to see a HUGE grey birch.
Your prize is nestled on its north side, under a rock among the roots.
After stamping up you might like to continue along the trail.
Watch carefully along the water's edge at the next big tumble of boulders. See if you can find the stone arch.
Keep going to the middle ledge. Don't stop here.
Continue on around and up to the highest ledge for a magnificent view of Lake Massabesic.
You will know you are there if you are among the wind blown junipers.
This is a great spot for a fall foliage picnic.
Be sure to hold tightly to the little ones, there are no safety railings.
On our "planting" hike, we came upon a group of youngsters being taught the basics of rock wall climbing.
