Fortunate is the sick or injured sea turtle who is taken for care to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Topsail Beach - these turtles suffering from propeller wounds, fishing gear entanglements, hypothermia, infections or other turtlish ailments stand a far greater chance of survival than if left to fend for themselves. Even more fortunate are the turtles who are successfully treated and released back to the ocean, often after a hospital stay of several years - what a homecoming they have.

Follow the release route from the Turtle Hospital (on Carolina Ave., beneath the Water Tank) two blocks seaward to O-10. Eschew the steps of the boardwalk crossover (imagine you're a turtle, even on your best days you can't handle steps) and follow along close beside to the north of the crossover through the jeep-free zone.

Count the support posts for the crossover's hand rail. Stop at the tenth one, near the peak of the dune. Here we'll let the recovered turtles continue on their own to the ocean while we stop to recover a letterbox. Look behind post # 10, between the two crossbeams for a healthy sea turtle letterbox.

Be patient. On warm summer days this can be a very high traffic area. Keep discretion firmly in mind as you remove and replace this box.
