The location
Fort Atkinson State Historical Park , S 7th St., Fort Calhoun (about 15 miles north of Omaha)
About the place
Fort Atkinson was established as the first U.S. military post west of the Missouri River by the Yellowstone Expedition of 1819. From 1820-1827 it was occupied by the U.S. Army and may have been used again during the 1850`s. The fort was reconstructed in 1961. Currently the park offers interpretative center and hosts living history demonstrations.
Directions:
From Omaha: Take the I-680 N to the exit 12(toward 48th St.)Turn left onto US-75 N and drive about 8.5 miles. In Fort Calhoun turn right onto Madison St.,than left onto S 7th St. Drive about 0.1 mile north and enter the park.
The Clues
Find and enter the Powder Magazine. Look through the first window (the one between the entrance and the shelves of ammo) to view the treeline. Go there to find stairs going down a hill into the woods. When the stairs end take a right and continue down the trail. Locate "The Meeting Place" at the bottom of the hill in a field. Go the direction specified by The Meeting Place to where the trail once again enters the woods.Find the maple bridge.
