Your letterbox hike will take you to three states in just 5 miles!
To begin take route 44 to route 100 in Burrillville RI. Follow route 100 for several miles to Buck Hill Road on left. Then drive 2.3 miles to the dirt road entrance to Buck Hill State Management Area on your right.

From the parking area proceed through the gate and straight up the dirt road. There is a sign board with a map when you first pass the gate. Continue straight on this dirt road across another trail and past a pond and marsh area. Travel for a short time with the pond to your left before the road turns into a narrow woods path. Follow this path for about 3/4 mile and cross a woods road to continue on the trail. Walk another 1/2 mile until you come out on another woods road. This is the Old Starr Road one of the 1st roads built in this area. Turn right on Old Starr Road and walk past another dirt road on the left. Keep walking until you find an old foundation off the path to your right. You will find the Rhode Island Letterbox hidden in the northwest corner of the foundation carefully tucked behind one stone about 3 1/2 feet up. (Please be careful not to destroy the
foundation in your search for the box.)

Now backtrack on Old Starr Road past the trail you came in on, the road dips, then rises again to reach a Y intersection. Take the trail straight ahead then turn right when you see an opening going into a field. The field will be on your left, followed immediately by another field on your left. The trail becomes very narrow and overgrown. You will soon reach a T intersection, take a right. When you reach a trail on your left you will see the Mass/RI marker on the right. Take the trail on the left and keep your eyes open for two more Mass/RI markers on your way to the tri-state marker. Soon you will arrive at your next destination-the tri-state marker!
From this spot walk downhill at 20° to a 3 1/2 foot high boulder near a half fallen tree. You should find the Massachusetts Letterbox tucked beneath the boulder.

After leaving the tri-state marker take the trail that heads south. You should cross a geodetic survey marker, then head down hill. Follow this trail on the Rhode Island/Connecticut border. After about 1/3 mile, you will reach a wet area followed immediately by a crossroads. Continue straight here for another 3/4 of a mile until you reach another crossroads next to a yellow sign that says “No Unauthorized Vehicles Beyond This Point”. Look to the right for a fallen deer stand. The Connecticut Letterbox will be found where the stand crosses a tree.

To return to your car, take the trail left and follow through two fields to another grass covered woods road. Turn right on the road and walk until you reach the pond/marsh area again. Take a right and return to your car on the gravely road which you came in on.
