These clues were written by the boys in Cub Scout Den 11 of Pack 216 from Cary, North Carolina. These clues require the use of a compass. All paces sized by 9-year-old boys!

Start in Apex Community Park located in Apex, NC entering from Laura Duncan Road. Park your car in the lot behind the batting cages, near the entrance to the greenway. Follow the greenway path down the hill and along the power-lines. Make a right at the bottom of the hill so you are heading west and away from the lake. Take the first left and look for the entrance to the yellow-triangle nature loop.

When you come to the second intersection in the nature trail, use your compass to choose the path at heading 320°. Follow the trail until you come to the first picnic table.

Letterbox #1

1. Starting at the first picnic table, from the middle of the bench head 10° east of north about 9 paces (as taken by a 9-year-old) to the double-trunk tree with the big knot at its base.

2. Turn to 350° and take 22 paces past an old stump with leaves to the tree cluster with a bent over tree and another tree holding it up. Watch out for the thorns!

3. Walk along the fallen tree cradled by its brothers to the stump at the bottom.

4. Face 320° and take 6 paces to the cluster of seven trees big & small: two sturdy ones pointing up and two small ones pointing out.

5. On the northeast side of the trunks, hidden under the leaves is your prize!

When this part is complete, return to the picnic table and the path.

Letterbox #2

1. Continue following the yellow-triangle trail over a small, plank bridge.

2. Before you come to the longer plank bridge, look for a bending tree on the left side of the path.

3. Face 340° and take 12 paces to a very large pine tree.

4. Turn to 60° and follow along the fallen tree to its roots. Hidden in the roots is the second box.

When this part is complete, return to the path.

Letterbox #3

1. Continue along the path and go over the longer plank bridge.

2. Look for a tree with a yellow triangle on the left side of the path.

3. Face southwest and walk to the tree with two red blazes.

4. From this tree, face south and take 20 paces to the large loblolly pine (the NC state tree).

5. Get behind this tree and face south-southwest (SSW) and take 24 paces to a huge oak tree. On the east side of the roots is the last letterbox!
