Unfortunately after checking on this box it was missing from its place and nowhere in sight. So much for my first urban letterbox.

This box commemorates an unsung hero of the Second World War.

Difficulty:
Drive-up. This is an urban box in a busy parking lot. It is also located by a Shortline bus stop.

Driving Directions:
The address is: Coney Island Restaurant, 14 Railroad Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940

From Rt. 17 take Exit 120W onto Rt. 211 West/Wickham Avenue. Turn left onto North Street, then left again onto Railroad Avenue. The restaurant appears on the right after the big laundromat.

Alternately, turn right onto Railroad Avenue from East Main Street by Tony Boffa's. The Coney Island will be on the left after the bowling alley on the right.

You can also turn into the parking lot entrance on North Street next to the end of Robert Street near the intersection of Orchard Street and Depot Street. It is a one-way parking lot from this direction.

Clue:
Go behind the Coney Island. You may notice that the parking lot is strangely curved. The shape of the lot follows the former route of the Erie railroad tracks. The railroad is no longer here. Yet there are rails behind the building. Find the steel rails at the back of the restaurant. Then find the rusty ring on the rail near where the buses park. Reach to the right of the rusty ring in the rail where the railroad once ran. You should be able to feel the box under the upper lip of the rail to the right of the rusty ring. It is a small box attached by very strong magnets. Grip tightly and try to remove the box without pulling off the lid.

Please be discreet and take the box elsewhere to stamp in, such as in your car. There are some trees nearby but their shade may be occupied by the local (human) wildlife. Please repack the box carefully.

This is a microbox with no ink pad.

Consider having a hot dog in the Coney Island. They serve the best dogs in Middletown.
