Hello!

To find these boxes you will need a compass. Also, all of our boxes are Bring Your Own Ink and Pen. One pace = two steps. The trails are kid, dog, and mountain bike friendly, but not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Approximate distances are provided along the way to tell you how far you've traveled. Please email with comments or questions.

Baby You Can Drive My Car to the Lake Accotink Marina. (7500 Accotink Park Rd Springfield, VA 22150)

Roll Over Beethoven, the new letterboxes are in town! The Fab Four are lost and need your Help! Bailing out of their Yellow Submarine, Paul, Ringo, George, and John are now scattered along the south side of Lake Accotink. All they have are their songs to keep them company!

Paul’s Box @ 0.55mi
Begin this Magical Mystery Tour by walking clockwise around the lake from parking lot and up a paved hill past the dam on your right. Cross over a wooden footbridge and take the trail bearing 330° (a single track trail that zig zags up a hill). At the top of hill, pass the large fallen tree on the right and continue straight to a paved path. Cross the paved path and pick up trail on other side. Step over a log and walk 26 paces to a small tree on the right with a blue cross and a red blaze. Keeping an eye out for Rocky Raccoon, take a bearing of 190° and walk 18 paces to a 10-foot stump with broken wings. Paul rests inside.

Let It Be and go back to the paved path. No longer the Fool On The Hill, turn left and walk downward. At bottom of hill, turn left along the main Accotink trail and go find Ringo.

Ringo’s Box @ 1.35mi
Continue along the main trail until you come to a metal fence on your left. Just past 4 large rocks on the right you will see a single wooden fence. Cross over the fence and walk 8 paces to a fallen log and a tree engraved R.H. + D.H. on left. Take ridge trail bearing 90°, walk 55 paces to a fork and for The Benefit Of Mr. Kite, please be careful on this trail! Bear 40° and walk 9 paces to a tall hollow tree with many carvings near the water. Standing next to tree, turn to 195° to face a stump. Find Ringo behind stump 3 paces up, in the hollowed Norweigan Wood.

After some Golden Slumbers, head back to main trail. Turn right to find George.

George’s Box @ 1.8mi
Continue on main trail until you find a sign on right that reads “Bicyclists Yield to Pedestrians.” Walk 30 more paces to small trail on right. Walk down the small hill passing a 3 trunked tree on left. From here, take the trail bearing 60° and walk to a fallen metal fence. Walk 20 paces along the path from the fence to a very large birch tree where you'll find the latest members of The Lonely Hearts Club Band. At B.R. + T.M., bear 335° and walk 5 paces to a small stump where George rests beneath bark.

If you Feel Fine, return to main trail and again turn right in search of John.

John’s Box @ 2.45mi (directions updated 8/2/2005 due to trail closing)
Continue Across The Universe. After passing the kiosk to the left and playground to the right, take the 1st trail on your left. Follow this winding trail until it comes to a T. Turn right to another T. Turn left and then just over the crest of the hill, walk to the next incoming path where 4 trees grow as one. You will find John Fixing A Hole. Carry That Weight away from the trail to stamp in.

To return to where you began, retrace your steps back to the main trail and turn right. Head down the Long And Winding Road back to the parking lot. Twist And Shout, you’re done!

Total Distance = 4.5mi (PHEW!!)

Goodbye!
