After all these years, one still remains in place.

The Claremont Colleges are a group of five undergraduate and two graduate schools. They are unique in that each college is independent, with its own faculty and curriculum, yet the colleges are also connected and work together. This way, a student in any of the colleges can reap benefits from all of them. Another unusual aspect of the Claremont Colleges is that the campuses are adjoining. If you’re a college campus junkie, walking through Claremont will give you a taste of many different styles of buildings, landscaping, and student artwork. The Claremont Colleges include: Pomona, Claremont Graduate University, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, and the Keck Graduate Institute.

In honor of the Claremont Colleges, I’ve placed letterboxes inspired by some of my favorite books.

------Anne McCaffrey’s "Dragonflight"------

Drummer, beat, piper, blow,

Harper, strike, and soldier, go.

Free the flame and sear the grasses

Till the dawning Red Star passes.

(Dragonflight, Chapter 1)

This box is on the Claremont Graduate University campus. First, find a map of the university’s buildings (www.cgu.edu). Look for the building where you’d be most likely to see Menolly, Piemur, Sebell, and of course, Robinton. If you’ve never read McCaffrey’s Pern books, the poem above might give you a clue.

Once you find the building, stand on the steps on the southwest side, facing the jumping water. Turn left. Look for the parking space fit for a “king.” Just to the west of that space is a street lamp. Lift the base of that street lamp. The letterbox is inside, on the south side. You may have to feel around a bit: magnets are involved. Once you have the box, the benches nearby are a great place to stamp in!

NOTE: This is an area bustling with people, especially when class is in session. It’s best to go in the evening, over the weekend, or during a school break (summer, holidays). You may want to rest a backpack or bag or something on the light pole base and act like you’re rummaging through it while lifting the cover.
