Tom's Snobbery Letterbox Series
Placed in honor of those things Tom is a snob about! :-)
*** Please Note - Box 4 is missing again. At this point it has not been replaced. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE hide the remaining boxes really well when you find them. We will update this site when we replace or move the boxes. ***
Veteran's Memorial Park,
Watertown (Oakville), CT.
First a little about the park... The park is open year round from 6:30 AM till sunset weekdays and from 8:00 AM till sunset on weekends. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed. Sorry Molly! This park can be heavily used at times so please be VERY discreet when stamping and hide boxes VERY well!! 3 of the 4 boxes went missing (see note above) so it is imperative that you be discreet and that the boxes are hidden well.
This is an easy walk (the sign says it is 3264 ft and we measured it at just over 6/10 of a mile. The loop brings you back to the parking area. All 4 boxes should take about an hour.
To begin, find your way to the Route 6 and Route 262 intersection in Watertown and proceed east on Route 262 up the hill till you get to the first blinking light. There is a sign on the left indicating the way to the park. Take a left onto Nova Scotia Hill Road. Follow the road for about ½ of a mile and you will see the park on your right. Enter the park and follow the road to the flagpole. After the flagpole take your first left into a parking lot. Travel through the parking lot and park as close to the far end as possible. You will see a pavilion across the lawn. Make note of its position in relation to your car as you will use this to find your way back to your car after the boxes have all been found.
The first box is called "Only In a Jeep" honoring the Jeep and its grand history and awesome versatility. The directions to it are as follows:
After parking the car in the parking area above, cross the main roads to the soccer field road. At the entrance to this road is a large rock with a plaque. Go to the soccer field parking lot and proceed left to the bike rack at the east end of the lot. From the end of the rack nearest the parking lot take a reading of about 45 degrees and proceed to a path and head down it. Cross a small brook (may be dry at times during the year) and immediately past the brook is a broken tree. Immediately after the tree is a large rock with some smaller rocks stacked around it. You will find the Jeep maneuvering among the rocks! If you cross a 2nd small (possibly dry) brook you’ve gone too far. Carefully re-hide and cover completely.
Retrace your steps from “Only In a Jeep” back to the parking lot and then proceed onto the road to the right
"Cable Modem"
At the main road go right and follow the road until you spy a bench on the left. Just past the bench, watch for a sign marked “Picnic Area”. Walk down the path between 2 large rocks. At times of the year they may be a water hazard to cross. From the large rocks count 20 steps to a two trunked tree on the left. At the tree head into the woods at a bearing of approximately North. From the double trunked tree take approximately 20 steps to a large, long flat rock with a gray birch in front. On the south side of the rock look under a smaller rock directly beneath a drilled hole (a blasting hole??). There you will find the letterbox that proclaims life is too short for a slow internet connection! Reseal the box well and replace it into the hole and replace the rock.
"Amateur (Ham) Radio"
Head back to the path by the double trunked tree and go left to a cluster of three trees (approximately 20 steps). From the tree cluster take approximately 13 steps and look for a large rock on the right of the path off into the brush about 15 feet. Go to the opposite side of the rock and look for a “ham” enjoying nature. Be discreet as this is near a picnic area!! Go back to the path and go right continuing in the direction you were going.
“Great Coffee”
Back on the path follow it until you again come to the main road and cross the road to the ball fields. Enter the ball field area on a path closest to the Handicapped Parking sign. Continue towards the bleachers and then go left on a gravel path with a slight incline up to a spot behind the backstop where the path splits. Go on the left fork following the white trail. You will cross though a stone wall. From the stone wall count approximately 25 steps and look for a four trunked tree with 2 dead trunks. The best coffee of your life awaits you there! This is also an area that can be seen from the ball field and bleachers so please re-hide well and be sure you are discreet.
To get back to your car, retrace your steps and come to the main road. Go right on the road and look for a sign on your left indicating “Playground Area” near two large boulders. Go down the path between the boulders and look for and head to the pavilion. When you reach the pavilion look for the parking area and your car.
