We recently found this picnic area with a terrific view of the Quabbin Reservoir. It is a nice quiet out of the way spot. There are 2 picnic tables there with a view towards the east. It is a wonderful place to watch the sunrise.
From Rt. 2 take exit 16 onto Rt. 202 south. Just after you go by the New Salem General Store on your right, take the next left, which is Wendell Rd (There is a sign at this Rd. that says “New Salem Center”). Go straight through the next intersection. When you see the town common on your right, look to your left and you will see the New Salem fire station. Immediately after the fire station, there is a small dirt road (looks almost like a driveway). Go down that road. When you get to the tennis court, bear right. Go to the end of the road, and park your car here. Walk down the path at the end of the road. You will soon come to the picnic area. After you enjoy the view, head back to your car. From the large tree on the edge of the overlook, go about 130 steps back towards you car. Look to your right (northeast). You will see the only rock around. Your prize is hidden in the rock. After stamping in, go back the way you came.
