CONFIRMED MISSING 11/5/05 (Hope to replant in this cemetery soon)

Evergreen Cemetery - East Ave, between Erie St and Prospect St, Owego, Tioga, NY HISTORY: On the National Registry of Historic Places, Evergreen Cemetery is an architectural marvel. Designed by Stephen Dexter around 1850, this cemetery is set high on East Beecher Hill, overlooking the town of Owego and the Susquehanna River. It is the final resting place of 4 NY state Congressmen - Howard Winfield Robison (1915-1987), John Mason Parker (1805-1873), John Reuben Drake (1782-1857), and John James Taylor (1808-1892) - and numerous others. "The cemetery was opened in 1851 at a time when society tried to mix life and death in a parklike setting, said Emma M. Sedore, Tioga County historian. During the 'rural cemetery movement', municipalities designed cemeteries on hillsides at the outskirts of town to be enjoyed by the living for Sunday outings as well as a final resting place for the dead. 'There were fountains up here, little pools of water, a gazebo,' Sedore said. 'People would bring families and spend the whole afternoon up here. This was the closest they could get to their loved ones. They never abandoned them. They were never forgotten.'" ESTIMATED HIKE TIME & DIFFICULTY: By car, this is a quick trip - we strongly suggest you do not attempt to drive a large vehicle through the cemetery roads, however, as they are relatively narrow and windy. For those on foot, the terrain is pretty easy - always stay on the paved roads; you will experience several moderately steep inclines. The cemetery is supposed to close in the evenings, but we recommend trying to get there right before sunset for the best experience. CLUES: Enter through the black wrought iron gates and ascend the hill - be aware that this road is for two way traffic. You will come to a Y where you must go left. Continue along until you pass a "POOL" on the right. At a T, you will see a wall of stairs in front of you. Turn right, winding your way to the apex. Look for the memorial with a bird's eye view - "By birth a daughter of the forest; by adoption a child of God." Marveling over this "LOFT"y sight, pause to look to the left and find a geological marker. Face the woods just beyond it and notice a tree taking a nap. Beneath its roots is what you seek. Take care to cover the box well with leaves and debris.
